A Real Life Trash-to-Treasure Story

Al Melideo began manufacturing galvanized residential trash cans and other steel products in 1959. In the early 1970s, he started making steel component parts for commercial container manufacturers. This led to his own front load and roll-off container manufacturing, and in 1974, Consolidated Fabricators Corporation (ConFab) was formed. Today, ConFab is the largest container manufacturer of its kind on the West Coast.

Al's experience at processing steel and component parts taught him a valuable lesson: to be self-sufficient in all aspects of manufacturing. By doing so, he could control his costs, maintain production schedules and, most importantly, keep on-time delivery commitments to his customers. This reputation for on-time delivery is still a focus of his son, Michael, who now runs the company. And to this day, the steel purchasing and processing aspects of the company remain its strengths.

The product line that began with refuse containers has expanded to include recycling, hazardous waste, material handling and storage containers. Many of the products are available in sub-assembled or knockdown form to facilitate out-of-state and overseas shipments. In addition, complete lines of nestable front load and roll-off containers are now available.

Vertical Integration Is Our Strength

In 1978, the company’s steel processing capabilities were further expanded by adding a steel service center to its locations. Steel coils are now purchased directly from mills, enriching ConFab’s buying power and allowing the company greater control of inventory levels. During the 1980s, several more steel processing and container manufacturing plants were set up, including the Building Products Division, which produces light-gauge framing products for the construction industry. The Centennial Steel division expanded to include plants in Los Angeles and Indiana. Additional container manufacturing plants were also started in Galt (Northern California) and in Maquiladora in Tijuana, Mexico.

This vertical integration of steel and production allows ConFab to develop diverse product lines and designs. In addition to complete steel processing facilities, ConFab operates its own tool and die shop, full-time engineering department and South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD)-compliant paint spray booths. These further ensure product consistency, flexibility, quality, competitive pricing and dependable service.

ConFab Is Acquired by Wastequip®

In 2020, Wastequip, the leading North American manufacturer of waste handling equipment, added ConFab to its portfolio of brands. This allows ConFab to take advantage of the strength of the Wastequip brand and leverage additional operating efficiencies to better serve its customer base, while allowing Wastequip to provide complete nationwide coverage for waste containers and related equipment.
